It's not difficult to see why humble small hatchbacks have become some of the UK's best family cars. We expect a lot from our cars, which must be practical, versatile, well-equipped, economical and reliable. Car manufacturers have clearly noticed this and are now competing to provide us with the very best family car. That means UK buyers are spoilt for choice when it comes to family hatchbacks. While it's better to have too much choice than too little, it can be more difficult for buyers to choose the right car for their needs. So, let's have a closer look at some of these cars in more detail, to help you make your choice.

Ford Focus

The Ford Focus celebrated its 20th birthday in 2018 and has been a roaring success in the small family hatchback market ever since. Now in its fourth generation, the Focus prides itself on its class-leading road handling, generous equipment levels and large choice of trim levels and engines. The Focus benefits from Ford's popular 1 litre EcoBoost engine, which gives you the fuel economy benefit of a small engine, with a turbo bolted on to give it the power of a larger engine. All models are equipped with alloy wheels and air conditioning, and a range of safety equipment including autonomous emergency braking and lane keeping assistant. Higher spec Titanium models will give you many of those little luxuries that you only usually see on more expensive cars.

Volkswagen Golf

The Volkswagen Golf is one of those cars that people aspire to own. It oozes sophistication and quality and is the epitome of German efficiency. There is a Golf to suit all tastes and budgets, from the all-electric Golf E and GTE models to the iconic GTI and fire-breathing R. There is a new entry level model called the Comfortline, which comes surprisingly well equipped with air conditioning, 15-inch alloy wheels, electric windows and mirrors, keyless entry and heated front seats. The Golf also features a range of new safety equipment including blind spot detection, autonomous emergency braking and adaptive cruise control, helping to keep you and your family safe on the road.

Kia Ceed

The Kia Ceed has quickly become a success and secured its place as one of the UK's best family cars. Originally launched as the Cee'd with an inexplicable apostrophe in its name, the newest version has got rid of the apostrophe and comes fitted with lots of new technology instead. The Korean manufacturer has become a genuine contender to its European rivals and boasts an unrivalled 7-year warranty to give you peace of mind for longer. Available in the sporty three door Pro-Ceed or family orientated 5 door version, the Ceed can suit almost every family's needs. The Ceed comes with a choice of three petrol versions and two Diesel models and is well equipped as standard and with room inside to seat four adults comfortably. Kia have also fitted a range of safety technology including autonomous emergency braking, lane keeping assistant and adaptive cruise control.

Other choices?

No round-up of small family car choices is complete without mentioning the stalwart Vauxhall Astra. The Astra has done battle with Ford since the days of the Escort, with a range of flexible petrol and Diesel engines and a choice of sporty and practical trim levels to help you pick the one that suits you the most. If you aspire to a touch of extra class you can consider models such as the BMW 1 Series and Mercedes A Class, both of which come packed with executive equipment in exchange for a slightly higher price and a little less interior space than some other rivals. Or if you're encouraged by good value, the Seat Leon offers a similar experience to its Volkswagen Golf cousin, with a splash of Spanish flair added in to the mix. It's fair to say that there is plenty of choice out there for small family car buyers!
