It's fair to say that family life is hectic, having to make sure the kids are ferried around to the right places at the right time, with all the right kit for whichever swimming club or birthday party they're on their way to. These demands mean that you need the right car for the job, which can swallow the average family and all their kit without any drama. The best family cars are roomy, practical, economical and reliable, and the great news is that there are many large family cars on the market that can satisfy these needs. Let's have a look at some of them in more detail to see which one might be best for you.

Volkswagen Golf SV

The Golf SV is one of Volkswagen's best kept secrets. When you think of a Golf, you think of the iconic small family hatchback. Where the Golf SV really excels is in the fact that it has a similar size footprint on the road to its regular Golf sister, but it has a taller body, giving it more headroom, legroom and boot space. A versatile sliding bench in the back lets you either give the family more legroom, or more boot space if you need to carry extra luggage, which is a thoughtful and useful touch. With a selection of the same petrol and diesel engines as the ordinary Golf, as well as a similar driving experience and level of comfort, you'll find the Golf SV a surprisingly good choice if you want a Golf but just need that bit more space. Or if you really need 7 seats, the slightly larger Touran is also worth a look.

Vauxhall Zafira Tourer

The Vauxhall Zafira was Vauxhall's first foray into the world of people carriers in the late 1990s and has been a tremendous success ever since. The Zafira Tourer builds on that success by providing even more room for the family than its Zafira sibling, with an extended body and 7 seats. The middle row of seats can be moved around to create even more space, making the Tourer a very practical choice for family buyers. A range of Vauxhall's petrol and diesel engines are available,  along with a range of trim options from the sporty SRi to the luxurious Elite. The rear seats are best for children rather than adults in either the standard Zafira or the Tourer, but they're a great help when your kids want their friends to come too.

Nissan Qashqai

The first job when considering a Qashqai is to learn how to spell it! Once you've accomplished that task, you'll find the Qashqai is a delightful car. It's a medium sized SUV style car, or an "urban crossover" as Nissan has dubbed it. It's taller than your average family hatchback with chunky styling and large doors, and it has plenty of room inside to seat the family in comfort while still being easy to park and drive around town. The seats are set higher than in normal hatchbacks, so you have a commanding view of the road around you. The standard Qashqai comes with five seats, but if you need a bit more space and an extra two seats, the slightly larger Qashqai+2 is available as a 7-seater alternative. With several petrol and diesel  models and a decent choice of trim levels, the Qashqai proves to be a well-equipped and versatile family car.

Other Notable Mentions

When it comes to choosing between the best family cars, there are plenty of options. If you're interested in a more conventional estate car rather than a people carrier or SUV, it's worth considering the Vauxhall Insignia Sports Tourer. It has classy and svelte lines and a luxurious interior, but still manages to deliver plenty of space for passengers, and a generous load area for all that luggage. Or if you really fancy a chunky SUV but the Nissan Qashqai isn't for you, then the Ford Kuga is well worth a look. The Kuga benefits from rugged styling, with plenty of equipment inside and lots of room for the family. Or if you'd like the reassurance of a market leading 7 year or 100,000 mile warranty, Kia offers this across their whole range, including their popular and dynamic Sportage SUV. The Sportage has a reputation for being reliable and pleasant to drive, making it a worthy rival to the Kuga and Qashqai.
