Here at Thame Cars we're all big fans of hatchbacks, they come in all shapes and sizes available with three or five doors. They’re among the most practical and versatile cars available today, and are also the most popular body style in the UK. Hatchback owners are spoilt for choice, here are some benefits as well as the best in the market.

Benefits of driving a Hatchback

Unless you need the boxy load space of an estate car, the enclosed boot space of a saloon or you prefer the svelte lines of a coupe, a hatchback is up for anything you throw at it. Folding rear seats and a large boot space in the back makes for a roomy loading area if you occasionally need to transport bulky items or the family dog. There is always a perfectly sized hatchback to suit your needs, from the fresh Ford Fiesta to the voluminous Vauxhall Insignia. Although a hatchback is more compact it has a better rearward view, making it easier to park.

If you're looking for a hatchback as your next car, here are some tips on what to look out for, and how to ensure you make the right choice for you and your family's needs:

  • Folding Rear Seats - Do they fold completely flat to help load your luggage?
  • Rear seat space - Is there enough room for your children? If not, perhaps consider the next size up.
  • Boot space - Is there enough room to store the weekly shop, or anything else you regularly carry? Is there a "false bottom" allowing you to stow items under the boot floor?
  • Loading Edge - Does the rear hatch open to leave an accessible load space without having to lug large and heavy items over an edge?
  • Versatility - Can you easily remove the parcel shelf? Can you fit a roof rack for bikes?

What’s recommended?

Hatchbacks are the best selling car type of 2017, this is due to them being so flexible and affordable – so you can pack all your luggage as well as doing the school run.

Ford Focus

The Ford Focus is the second best-selling car of 2017 so far, it isn't difficult to see why it's so popular - The Focus is renowned for its practicality and reliability, its timeless styling and its commanding driving experience, and has been a trusted car since its first release in 1999.

Vauxhall Astra

A main rival to the Focus but also a very strong contender in the mid-size hatchback stable, is the Vauxhall Astra. It’s a well-built car with a spacious interior and an excellent choice for those who need an all-rounder. It was voted fifth best family hatchback by the Telegraph and sixth by Car Keys. With similar power to the Focus above and a good specification, I would recommend the 1.4 Turbo Design. At Thame Cars you can test drive both the Focus and Astra under same roof!

Ford Fiesta

If you're looking for something a little more compact, then where better to look than the UK's consistently best-selling car, the Ford Fiesta? Available in three or five door, it's an attractive and flexible car, with plenty of standard equipment and an engaging driving experience that makes it a firm favourite with drivers. It sits firmly at the top of the sales charts as confirmed by Auto Express. It comes with a generous choice of engines and trim levels. If you want to spoil yourself with the generous specification giving you luxury motoring in a compact package.

Part of the overall Thame Car services means that we only select the most popular models for our nearly new Ford, Vauxhall and other popular styles, so you'd be sure to find an attractive and well specified hatchback here. Do pop in and see us, or browse our website if you'd like to see more.
