The unveiling of the latest tear-jerking John Lewis ad is now the marker for the official start of the festive season.

The ad might have you reaching for your credit card, Kleenex, and questioning the laws of astrophysics, but does it make you feel Christmassy?

There are only a few weeks to go now, but as I sit here now it’s a positively un-Chrismassy 17˚ outside.

But forecasters are predicting the chilliest Winter in many-a-year, with temperatures set to plummet to minus 16 and snowy chaos to besiege motorists the length and breadth of the country.

Stock footage of ice-locked cars in days-long traffic jams are providing the backdrop to these predictions of freezing doom & gloom.

You can either never leave the house, or brace yourself for travel disruption this Winter.

So make sure your car is as ready as it’s ever going to be to tackle the conditions.

Here are our top tips for your pre-Winter checks.

    1) Check your battery.

If you’ve not changed it in a couple of years check it’s condition. A sudden drop in temperature can cause worn batteries to drain quickly, leaving you stranded.

Pop round to THAME Cars and we’ll check it for you for free.

    2) Check your coolant

Flushing out your coolant and replacing it once every couple of years is good practice. At the very least make sure that it’s between the minimum and maximum markers & there’s enough antifreeze in it.

    3) Check your tyres

We just had National Tyre Safety month so you should be all good here, but just in case you haven’t checked your tread depth and wear, now is definitely the time to get on top of it.

Bring your car round to us and we’ll check it for you if you like (free of charge, of course or you could check your summer tyres into the Thame Tyre Hotel!

    4) Check your lights

Make sure all your bulbs are working. You need to be seen as well as see through the fog, snow, sleet, and everything else Mother Nature can throw at you.

    5) Pack your emergency kit

It’s always a good idea to have a few pieces of emergency kit in your car for unexpected events. If your journey does ever get frozen in an ice-jam you’ll want to have blankets, bottled water & emergency food (kendal mint cake is a classic!) to hand.

You may also want to consider stashing one of those external phone batteries for your smart phone or tablet. In an emergency this could be an essential piece of equipment for ensuring the kids don’t send you insane.

The weather will be what it will be.

The best we can do is to be prepared.

For now, enjoy the warmth of the sun & get in the festive spirit with the new John Lewis ad. For some reason there was a localised case of hay fever when I watched it which is very strange as it’s JUST AN AD!

If you’re unsure about preparing your car for Winter please do just bring it in to us and we’ll run through a few checks for you, no strings attached.

Oh and if you fancy changing to winter tyres and giving your summer tyres a break , quote ‘Tyre Hotel’ and receive £5 off each winter tyre when you check your summer tyres in.
