A Sobering Thought

After a great night out with some friend on Saturday night I awoke feeling a little the worse for wear.

I do like to party, from time to time, but now on the other side of 40 and the prospect of a day with the family Christmas shopping my body (especially my head) does not have the same recovery powers as 20 years ago.

I was staying at a friends house in Oxford and had to leave by 10am to get back to begin my shopping trip with my very excited family.

I had a great fry up as prescribed by my host Dr Paul and that certainly made me feel slightly better and I drove home.

It wasn’t until I got home and thought should I actually have driven home?

What would have happened if I had been stopped?

Would I have been over the limit?

46%

A recent AA survey which I later Googled concluded I wasn’t alone.

Apparently 46% of the people surveyed believed they drove knowing they could be over the limit.

The survey also uncovered the things some people do in the belief it will bring down their alcohol level

  1. Drink lots of water
  2. Eat a fried breakfast
  3. Drink fruit juice
  4. Take an asprin
  5. Go for a run
  6. Drink Irn-Bru
  7. Eat chocolate

None of these activities have any evidence to back the theory but many of us still believe them.

Cracking Down

breathaliser

Breathalisers: Required in France

In France it’s a legal requirement that you carry a personal breathaliser in your car and that’s not a bad idea for these situations so that you know that you’re on the right side of sober.

This cheap and cheerful disposable option from Halfords does the job (though make sure you read the label - I don’t think that “But Nick said it’d be ok” will stand up in court!)

Police in many areas are cracking down on morning drink drivers over the Christmas period so I guess the best thing to do is to either get a lift or stop consuming alcohol much earlier in the night if you are planning on driving the following day.

A sobering thought. (pardon the pun but I had to do it)

Have a very safe Happy “Merry” Christmas
